RECOMMENDED BOOKS

The bottom billion. Paul Collier. OUP Oxford 2007
Shocking in most of his statements and conclusions, the book analyse how different interventions can help to prevent conflicts, fight poverty and develop the poores countries in the world. Based in studies carried out in Oxford University, where the author is Director of the Centre for the Study of African Economies, it can help us to think in a broader perspective

The shadow of the sun. R. Kapuściński. Vintage 2002
To understand how is really Africa, beyond the stereotypes created by the literature, the movies or the news. Kapuściński did not just report from Africa, he lived deeply inside the continent and his testimonies and stories can help us to go there with the right attitude

ENTERTAINMENT IN THE FIELD

Books are essentials in your luggage when going to the field. In general, forget about book stores except in the capital of the country, but usually you can find some books in the expat house in the field. If your mother tongue is not English, bring all the books you think that you can need for the whole mission. If working in a big city, Amazon.com can be an alternative, but expect long times of delivery and remember that mail in developing countries do not always work properly. For the big readers, a good option can be the electronic books (eg: Sony eBook or Amazon Kindle) that can store hundreds of books in PDF or other formats and need just to recharge the battery after some time.
Movies are also an important part of the “entertainment kit”. Put them in your computer or in a external hard disk (better the small ones that do not need to plugged). In many cities of the developing world, illegal copies of movies are widely available
A mp3 player is also a useful device to bring to the field. Pick one that can recharge while connected to the computer instead of needing batteries
